Artist Bio
Nancy Stone

Tension is a welcome partner in Nancy’s creative process.  Her work is often launched with abandon as pigment is playfully pushed or poured to the point of losing control over the subject and composition.  Maintaining that abstract under-painting, areas are then adjusted and edges are suggested, creating a balance between definition and nuance.  This often results in a painting that is powerful from a distance yet fascinating up close.  Her focus is less about ‘what’ is painted than it is about ‘how’ it is painted.

Watercolor is a favorite medium since it allows intentional accidents and varied color dynamics.  At other times, she creates sculptural artists’ books that demand exploration of art techniques that best integrate with the theme and invoke change over time as pages turn and scrolls unfurl.  The swing between various media alters comfort levels and prompts adventurous problem-solving.  Whatever the creative technique, Vermont’s external environment is a constant influence upon Nancy’s internal aesthetic and artistic expression.

Nancy Stone is a Vermont painter, book artist and art teacher. She is a member of the Bryan Memorial Gallery, Northern Vermont Artists Association, the VT Crafts Council and a Signature member of the Vermont Watercolor Society. Her acrylic and watercolor paintings have received numerous best-in-show awards, including 2005’s Juror’s Award at the Vermont Watercolor Society, the 2006 “Grand Prize” at the Champlain Valley Exposition, the 2008 watercolor award and 2010 mixed media award from Northern VT Artists Assoc.  Her hand-made artist’s books have been in juried shows at the Wood Art Gallery, Montpelier; Studio Place Arts Gallery, Barre; and Shelburne Art Center where her book received the 2006 Juror’s Award.  Nancy taught art in public schools for 24 years. She currently is Co-Founder/Co-Chair/editor of the Book Arts Guild of VT, teaches “Introduction to Book Arts” at the Community College of VT, and mentors young artists.
