Painting with Christopher

A three day workshop with plein air painter Christopher Magadini

August 22-23-24, 2008

Master landscape painter Christopher Magadini will present a three day plein air painting workshop entitled Painting with Christopher.    The workshop will include two plein air painting sessions per day, and will culminate in an evening session on the third day, discussing the artwork in progress, and the experience of painting in plein air.

The painting locations will change each day, with a morning session and an afternoon session at each place.  On the morning of day one Magadini will give a lecture and a demonstration.  In the afternoon the participants will set up and paint while receiving one on one instruction and advice.  On days two and three the participants will paint two paintings each day as they continue to receive individual instruction.  At the end of each day the painters will gather for a critique of their work.  Should poor weather conditions prevent painting on location the group will receive instruction on portrait and figure painting from live draped models indoors.    For examples of Magadini's work please see his web site at Chrismagadini.com.

Magadini’s style could be called Contemporary Impressionism although the pastoral quality of his work recalls the naturalism of 19th Century American Landscape Painting. An incredible technician, Magadini is a skilled painter who has synthesized characteristics of these movements to create his own style, where the power of nature to stir the human spirit becomes paramount.

In his own oil painting, Magadini takes full advantage of the medium’s wonderful qualities. No matter the size, Magadini’s work exhibits a rich painterly surface, enhanced by masterful brushwork. His stated goal of “capturing the illusion of space and form while retaining a beautiful and interesting surface” is revealed in these paintings.

Magadini has said, “For me, painting is not simply the replication of what the eye sees. It is the creation of an image that embodies my thoughts and feelings. These, I think, are fairly universal, and I seek to communicate and connect with viewers on that level.”

Christopher Magadini was born in Great Barrington, MA, raised in the West, and graduated from The Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles.  He pursued commercial illustration in Stockholm, Sweden, and Phoenix and Flagstaff AZ, before receiving a full fellowship to Syracuse University, where he earned an M.F.A. degree. Magadini has taught at Northern Arizona University and Marymount College in Tarrytown, NY, and has been a guest lecturer at the School of Visual Arts and at the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan. He lives in Croton-on-Hudson, NY, and summers in the Adirondacks.

Artists in any medium are welcome, though Christopher’s expertise is in the field of painting with oils.  Artists at any stage of their development are welcome, though all participants should expect to start at least three paintings during the workshop.

A list of suggested materials in oil medium will be provided upon receipt of your registration, as well as a list of recommended local accommodations.

A more specific schedule will also be sent in response to your registration.

Fee:  $325 for three days.  Full payment expected with registration.  Attendance is limited to 10 participants, so please register early.  Registrations will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.
